Arsenal land Konsa for £51m as injury cover defensive crisis

Konsa, 28 years old and sporting an England cap, breezed through his medical. He's the fifth 'big' summer signing for Arsenal, joining Piero Hincapie, Illan Meslier, Christos Tzolis, and Bruno Guimaraes. A real shopping spree, huh?

Suddenly, Mikel Arteta's backline looks a little less threadbare. Konsa's arrival plugs a gaping defensive hole, just in the nick of time. Saliba and Timber? Long-term casualties. The reigning Premier League champs, scrambling for bodies, desperate for depth anywhere they can get it.

Now, about that price tag. Aston Villa started high: £60m. Arsenal, ever the negotiators (or so they tell us), talked them down to £51m. For that princely sum, they get a guy who, last season, won more ground duels than any other Premier League defender. Seriously. Sky Sports says he beat both Virgil van Dijk *and* Gabriel combined. Can't argue with those numbers.

They apparently kicked the tires on other options. Jarell Quansah at Bayer Leverkusen was on the list, for instance. But Konsa got the nod. Good thing, too. He slots in at right-back or centre-back. Convenient. Sure, they've got Cristhian Mosquera and Ben White knocking around as 'backup,' but White's spent more time in the physio room than on the pitch the last couple seasons. A real worry.

First game? August 31. Against his old club, Aston Villa. On Sky Sports, naturally. What a narrative.
