FIFA has launched disciplinary proceedings against Argentina for displaying a banner claiming the Falkland Islands during their 2026 World Cup semi-final victory over England, and for player misconduct after losing the final to Spain.

The governing body is investigating Argentina on multiple fronts. The most prominent issue centres on a banner reading "The Falklands are Argentine" that players held after their 2-1 semi-final win over England. According to Sky Sports, the banner—brought to the stadium by supporters—was displayed in front of fans and briefly placed on the pitch. FIFA views this as a breach of article 13, paragraph 2(c), which prohibits sporting events being used for non-sporting demonstrations.

Beyond the banner incident, FIFA is examining discriminatory chants, gestures, team misconduct, security protocol failures and other inappropriate messaging.

The second wave of charges stems from the World Cup final defeat to Spain. Leonardo Paredes faces three assault charges under article 14, paragraph 1(i) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code for pushing Spain players. Nahuel Molina is under investigation for striking Rodri at full-time, whilst Thiago Almada and Argentina coach Roberto Ayala also face proceedings. Spain's Gavi has separate charges for unsporting behaviour.

The infractions highlight FIFA's continued effort to enforce rules against political statements and player conduct at international tournaments, though such cases often generate debate about proportionality and context.
