Guimaraes Arrives at Arsenal: Tactical Fit and Midfield Depth

The 28-year-old Brazilian joins a crowded midfield that already features Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Martin Odegaard, Mikel Merino and Myles Lewis-Skelly. Yet his arrival signals Arteta's intent to add both quality and tactical flexibility.

Guimaraes has played most of his Newcastle minutes at the base of midfield, but equally capable operating as a box-to-box No 8 — his stated preference. This adaptability is precisely what attracted Arsenal's sporting director Andrea Berta, who said the Brazilian will help the club "develop [its] playing style" while increasing midfield competition (via Sky Sports).

Over five seasons at Newcastle, Guimaraes contributed 30 goals and 25 assists in 153 Premier League appearances. Remarkably, he managed four goals and five assists in one campaign playing as a defensive midfielder, then seven goals and eight assists the following year in the same role, demonstrating his offensive threat regardless of positioning.

Guimaraes has described his playing style as that of a "warrior" who combines physicality with composure and technical ability. He can dominate defensively while also supporting attacks, a profile that meshes well with Arteta's philosophy of positional fluidity. His willingness to prioritise team needs over individual preference — expressed when he accepted the No 6 role despite preferring No 8 — further reinforces why he appeals to a manager who values intelligent squad players.

The Brazilian told Newcastle bosses he was keen to join Arsenal when the right offer materialised.
