Man Utd's £1bn rebuild faces Champions League reality check

Michael Carrick's revival—which hauled United from seventh to third and secured Champions League football—came during a uniquely light campaign. Last term, the club played just 40 games across all competitions, the joint-fewest of any Premier League side and their lowest since 1913/14.

That minimal schedule allowed Carrick to maintain consistency without rotation. This season, with eight guaranteed European fixtures and potential knockout rounds, United could face as many as 67 games—a stark contrast.

Yet despite their massive outlay, the club's spending has lacked strategic balance, according to analysis by Sky Sports. Only 19 per cent of the £1bn invested since 2022 went on defenders—the third-lowest proportion among Premier League clubs—while 42 per cent targeted forwards. The midfield received heavy focus this summer with Baleba, Santos and Tielemans arriving, yet defensive depth remains thin.

The contradiction is stark: United boast the third-most valuable forward line in the big six, but their midfield and defence rank as the least valuable. Worse, their back four against Everton was unchanged from Erik Ten Hag's opening match in May 2022.

Carrick has spoken positively about the increased demands, noting his players have European experience. But United's last spell juggling continental football, in 2024/25, ended in 15th place. Without tactical adjustment and defensive reinforcement, the same fate beckons.
