Merson: Chelsea's experience gamble, Welbeck's playing-time puzzle

Chelsea's mooted double signing of Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck represents a clear strategic shift, according to Merson in his Sky Sports column. Rather than chase long-term youth projects, the club is pursuing immediate stability with experienced operators.

"It's not about the future for Chelsea, it's about the here and now," Merson argues, defending the signings of players in their mid-30s. Experience proves vital when younger squad members struggle or supporters grow restless, he suggests.

However, Welbeck's transition poses a particular challenge. At Brighton, he played roughly 30 games in each of the last two seasons—a volume that becomes harder to replicate at a club juggling multiple fronts. "It's hard to stop-start when you get to a certain age," Merson explains, drawing on his own playing career. "You need to keep on playing."

Without European football to provide additional fixtures, game time will be scarce. Merson expects Welbeck to struggle for regular starts, especially with Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers occupying attacking midfield duties.

Henderson, by contrast, fits a clearer role. Merson sees him operating as a closer—a final-15-minute substitute who steadies possession and marshals younger players when Chelsea hold narrow leads. "For me, he would play a big part," Merson says, citing Chelsea's propensity for conceding late goals.

On Arsenal, Merson notes their pursuit of Vinicius Jr or Bradley Barcola signals their ambition in the market, though he believes Vinicius is angling for improved terms at Real Madrid rather than a genuine move.
