Messi Steps Back From Argentina as Spanish Club Ownership Takes Shape

Messi announced his retirement from international football on 31 August, six weeks after Argentina's World Cup final loss to Spain. At 208 caps, he departs as the nation's most-capped player and record goalscorer, roles reflected in the stature of his farewell fixture.

Coach Lionel Scaloni has made clear the door remains open should Messi reconsider, though those around the 37-year-old expect the decision to stand.

His Inter Miami contract extends to the end of 2028, reviewed annually, and insiders believe renewal is likely if he feels capable. His attention, however, is shifting towards ownership. According to BBC Sport, Messi acquired UE Cornella, a fifth-tier Barcelona-area club, in April as a youth development base. More significantly, he became owner of CD Eldense in Spain's second division on 1 October, subject to Spanish sports council approval.

Eldense will anchor his football operation. Former Villarreal manager Javi Calleja was appointed with the mandate of preventing relegation. Messi monitors matches closely remotely and has already attracted around a dozen sponsors following his involvement.

In Uruguay, Messi and Luis Suarez founded Deportivo LSM in May 2025; it secured third-tier promotion in its inaugural season. Plans for a wider network of clubs were shelved due to the financial demands of climbing divisions.

Messi has previously expressed a preference for ownership over coaching, drawn to shaping club direction without the constant pressure of weekly matchdays.
