Ten Hag's United: Wrexham Opener a Stumble, Santos In.

Manchester United's summer? Started with a thud. Michael Carrick’s lot went down 1-0 to Wrexham, a Championship side. First pre-season game. First loss. And new £50m man Andrey Santos got his debut in the first half. Helsinki's Olympic Stadium. What an introduction.

The Brazil midfielder got the nod. Didn't have much space to move, though. United was already behind by the break, thanks to Sam Smith's 39th-minute tap-in. Carrick decided to scrap the whole XI for the second half. Academy kids came on. Tyler Fletcher even got the armband.

United tried to claw it back. No dice. Couldn't break through. Backup keeper Radek Vitek, who had a decent run-out at Bristol City, did make a good save. Denied Wrexham's Davis Keillor-Dunn mid-second half. Just delayed the inevitable, really.

Wrexham's goal? Came out of nowhere. A throw-in from the left. Found its way through a mess in the box. Squeezed past Harry Maguire’s legs. Right to Smith. Simple finish. United did create chances, though. Joshua Zirkzee fired one inches wide. Just no killer instinct when it counted.

Carrick probably hopes for something, anything, sharper. Next up: Rosenborg in Trondheim, 24 July. Good luck with that.

Betting angle

Defensively, United looked like a sieve. Even against a non-Premier League side. Expect the public to pile on when they face actual competition. Maybe that's your angle.
