UEFA threatens World Cup boycott over Infantino investment plans

All 55 UEFA member associations, including England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, backed the boycott following an emergency virtual meeting on Thursday. The English FA stated: "We stand shoulder to shoulder with our European colleagues and fully support the collective view. We oppose FIFA's plans. The FIFA World Cup belongs to football and always will."

The immediate implications are stark. No European nations would participate in the 2025 Women's World Cup in Brazil or the 2030 World Cup hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco.

UEFA's ultimatum carries considerable weight. According to Sky Sports News, six of eight quarter-finalists at the most recent World Cup came from Europe, alongside three semi-finalists and the eventual champion. Any external investor eyeing a 20 per cent stake in FIFA tournaments would face severe uncertainty if Europe's leading confederations withdrew.

CONCACAF, representing 41 member associations in North America, Central America and the Caribbean, also rejected Infantino's proposals, expressing "deep concerns" but stopping short of announcing a boycott.

The move represents an extraordinary escalation in tensions between UEFA and FIFA leadership, with sources suggesting that if a serious rift develops, UEFA could theoretically establish its own global tournament, further diminishing the commercial appeal of Infantino's scheme.
